5 songs we wish were song of the summer

Sorry folks, summer is almost over, and with it goes the long-contested race for Song of the Summer. The pickings — as usual — were slim, and it seems that The Weeknd’s “Can’t Feel My Face” and OMI’s “Cheerleader” came out on top, battling for the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s Hot 100. (For the record, some of our music industry insiders’ predictions were right!)

But what about the other Songs of the Summer? The ones we were obsessed with but didn’t get enough air time or radio play? Those are the real winners — at least in our book. Here are the 15 songs that should have been Song of the Summer.

1.”Classic Man” by Jidenna

With its clubby chant, confident swagger, and Kendrick Lamar-assisted remix, Jidenna’s “Classic Man” had all the juice to become 2015’s summer anthem. The track serves as Jidenna’s official debut single and gives the Stanford grad one impressive introduction to the Billboard Hot 100. — Madeline Boardman

2.Norf Norf” by Vince Staples

If there was ever a year where a hard rap song should have been song of the summer, this was the year and “Norf Norf” was the song. Staples’ West Coast flow gives summer vibes all the way. — Madison Vain

3.”Sledgehammer” by Fifth Harmony

The X Factor group’s “Worth It” may have had more airplay this summer, but the quintet slayed with this irresistible slab of strutting future-funk, co-written by Meghan Trainor. — Kevin O’Donnell

4.”Crash & Burn” by Thomas Rhett

Never has defeat been so danceable. The lead single off Rhett’s forthcoming “Tangled Up,” has Rhett crooning about getting dumped again and again over a whistling beat and finger-snapping rhytmn that’s near irresistible. — MV

5.”Good Times” by Jamie xx

Jamie xx’s swaggering melting pot shouldn’t have worked: A Persuasions hook leads to a bridge from Popcaan, the guy from that Drake song about runnin’ through the 6, and cruise line steel drums mingle with rhymes. But Jamie xx fuses these disparate parts into a euphoric blast—seriously, there’s gonna be good times! — Eric Renner Brown
